Aquatic Therapy
Jun 12, 2008 - Jul 31, 2008; 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM; Every week on Thursdays .
Currently, Aquatics is only offered at the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center / St. Joseph's Hospital.

The St. Joseph campus has an outdoor pool for therapy use.  It is protected from the sun by a large awning.  Unfortunately, it is a free standing pool without an office, waiting room or shower facilities.  There is however, an adjacent building with restrooms and water fountain.  It is best to bring your own water to have with you pool side (in a plastic container) for hydration and convenience.

The pool water temperature is kept at approximately 88-90 degrees for therapeutic purposes.  Since it is an outdoor pool, the duration of the session is undetermined pending the upcoming fall weather.  If it is raining, sessions will be cancelled.

Participants must bring their own towels.  Water shoes are recommended, and it is suggested that people come dressed in their swimsuits with cover up / clothing over.  Prior to leaving participants can change in the bathroom before getting in the car to go home.

If someone needs assistance, they absolutely must bring a caregiver to help as necessary both in the pool area and in the restrooms.

Participants must pre-register for safety purposes, class size limitations, and to recieve a parking pass.

This all sounds like a little inconvenience, but aquatic therapy is well worth it for those who are comfortable in the water.  In a study of the effects of an aquatic program designed for people with Parkinson's disease, results showed improvements in lower and upper body strength, upper and lower body flexibility, mobility, aerobic endurance, and static and dynamic balance after just 12 weeks.

This class is held at the

St. Joseph's Pool
7th Avenue and Thomas Road

Tai Chi - Mesa
Jan 10, 2008 - Jul 31, 2008; 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM; Every week on Thursdays .
Tai Chi, based on ancient Chinese exercise, is an experience of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Particular benefits of Tai Chi to people with a movement disorder include reduced stress and increased energy, improved circulation, muscle tone, concentration and focus, and significant improvement in balance.

Classes are $5.00 per class, pay as you go. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that allows freedom of movement. For safety, efficiency and quality, participants must pre-register.
